EL INVERNADERO DE LA UPAZ

Los personajes sobre los que se habla en este blog y quienes construyen este lugar no son únicamente personas; a veces, son proyectos, espacios, acciones y/o elementos diversos que han tomado protagonismo dentro del día a día de la universidad, cosas que más que formar parte del inmobiliario y el paisaje, cuentan un pedazo importante de lo que es este lugar.

Esta vez, la historia no tiene una sola cara ni un solo origen, sino que es más bien un punto de encuentro y el resultado del trabajo de muchas personas en un gran proyecto.

Elegimos un actor que recientemente se incorpora al campus, para repensar un espacio que ya existía y que hoy busca adaptarse a las necesidades y condiciones del mundo actual. Nuestro invernadero es un nuevo espacio de aprendizaje práctico y colaborativo, diseñado para producir alimentos orgánicos para el disfrute de nuestra comunidad, a la misma vez que fungirá como una herramienta de enseñanza en temas de seguridad alimentaria. Gran ejemplo de esta colaboración son sus primeros días de existencia, en los que estudiantes, personal de la universidad y asesores externos se unieron para su construcción, preparación de suelos y siembra de las primeras plantas. Adelante un recorrido visual de este nuevo pedacito de UPAZ que, aun estando contenido dentro de una caja blanca, se mantiene inmerso en la increíble atmosfera que tanto caracteriza el campus de la universidad.

UPEACE GREENHOUSE

The characters contained in this blog, who collectively make up this place, are not only people; sometimes they are projects, spaces, actions and/or diverse elements that have taken center stage in the daily life of the university, components which, rather than become a part of the furniture or the landscape, tell an important part of the story of this place.

This time, the story does not have a single face or a single origin, but is rather a meeting point and the result of the work of many people on a great project.

We have chosen an actor who recently became a part of the campus, in an effort to rethink a space that already existed and is seeking to adapt to the needs and conditions of the current global reality. Our greenhouse is a new space for practical and collaborative learning, designed for both the production of organic produce for our community to enjoy and as a teaching tool on issues of food security. The collaborative nature of this project was evidenced during its first days of existence, during which students, university staff and external consultants came together for its construction, including preparing the soil and planting the first crops. The following images will take you on a tour of this new space which, although confined within a white box, remains immersed within the beautiful atmosphere that so characterizes the UPEACE campus.

El Tigre. Cartago.

El Tigre, como él se hace llamar pero como también apoda a todos a su alrededor, compartió con los estudiantes su sabiduría de tantos años trabajando en agricultura. Además, es el proveedor de las plantas orgánicas que se sembraron en el invernadero. Lideró al grupo con una sonrisa y la energía que todos quisiéramos tener a su edad, manteniendo al grupo trabajando fuerte toda la mañana.

El Tigre, as he calls himself and everyone around him, shared the wisdom he has accumulated over the years working in agriculture with the students. He is also the supplier of the organic plants that were used in the greenhouse. He led the group with a smile and the energy that we all hope to have at his age, keeping the group working hard all morning.

La otra mitad del gran equipo, él es quien acompaña a El Tigre en este camino de enseñar y vivir la agricultura orgánica. Es un hombre de pocas palabras, pero de quién se puede aprender mucho, solo hace falta mirar con atención.

The other half of the dream team, he is the man who joins El Tigre on this path of teaching and living organic agriculture. He is a man of few words but from whom you can learn a lot, you just need to pay careful attention.

Nelson. El Rodeo.

Nelson lleva 8 años trabajando en la UPAZ. Pertenece al equipo de operaciones y, junto con su compañero Eliécer, colaboraron con el trabajo en el invernadero. El equipo de mantenimiento de la UPAZ, de quienes hablaremos más adelante en detalle, es de lo más versátiles en la universidad. Encuentran soluciones a cuanto proyecto aparezca en el camino y siempre tienen la mejor disposición para colaborar.

Nelson has been working at UPEACE for 8 years. He belongs to the UPEACE maintenance team, and together with his colleague Eliecer. collaborated on putting the greenhouse together. The UPEACE maintenance team, which we will tell you more about later on, is one the most versatile ones at UPEACE, with both the willingness and the ability to find solutions to any project that comes their way.

Olivia Sylvester. Canada.

Olivia Sylvester es la Jefa del Departamento de Medio Ambiente y Desarrollo y forma parte de nuestro profesorado residente. Ella es la mente maestra y líder detrás de este hermoso proyecto. Es más probable encontrarla en el campo, su lugar favorito para enseñar, pero también desde donde le gusta más aprender.

Olivia Sylvester is the Head of the Department of Environment and Development our resident faculty. She is the mastermind and leader behind this beautiful project. She is most likely to be found out in the field, her favorite place to teach, and what she enjoys learning the most from.
